Well, scene one of this is finally done. Idk wtf I'm doing though.

System processing…..updating……activating…..ready

He jolted awake at the sound of the beep. The room glowed silver around him and he tossed his head wildly as he looked for the source. He found it on the table, a small square jewel that shone with the light. Blocky text scrolled across its surface before it vanished and the light cut out.

He blinked in the sudden dark and picked up the jewel. Something pulsed at the back of his head, but he knew better than to reach for it. The last time he had tried, he had wound up with a headache for days. His watchers had been upset too and had made their presence more visible than usual.

"What are you," he muttered to the object as he turned it over in his hands.

"Seventh class weapon, designation Damocles"

A high metallic voice spoke from the object as more of that blocky text scrolled across its surface. He stared at it, wondered how such a small object could be a weapon but decided to introduce himself; it was only polite.

"Hello Damocles," he said. "I am Seres"

His name was one of the few things he could remember from the past. The rest was broken fragments of voices, the occasional feeling of something immense calling him and the consistent sense that there was something missing in him. He tried not to think about it. The doctors had told him that his memory most likely wouldn't come back and his watchers had foiled every single one of his attempts to learn more about his past.

"User accepted," Damocles said. "Please select a weapon form"

Seres frowned. Why would he need a weapon? There was nothing in the city that could hurt him, not with the watchers. He turned his head to look at the sharp skyline of the city around him. He had forgotten to close the window again.

Grale was relatively safe, except for the areas near the rift. Through the middle of the city ran a dark streak of something that looked very much like smoke. There was a rumor that it was remnants of energy from another universe, but he didn't get a chance to hear much. His watchers had caused an incident and he had been followed more closely for the next several weeks.

"Please select a weapon form," Damocles repeated and there was a slight shift in the tone. It almost sounded like impatience, but that couldn't be right. Could AI's get impatient?

He was pretty sure Damocles was an AI, though there was no memory of this level of technology in his recent memories. He set that thought aside for later and focused on the words.

"Do I need a weapon?"

"Weapon form must be selected for setup"

He sighed. He'd have to pick something. He thought about the various weapons he'd seen. His watchers probably used guns. He had seen sunlight glint off of something metallic more than once. A warning whenever he got too close to the rift.

The police used tasers and shields. Oddly enough, they didn't have guns. No one had told him why.

He shook his head. He didn't want a gun or a taser; too obvious. More images popped up in his mind. A sword, sharp and shining. A staff, lacquered and dark.

"Please select a weapon form," Damocles said and that was definitely impatience in its voice. Seres sighed. Both the sword and the staff made his head ache, but the staff would be more innocuous. He could say it was a walking stick if anyone asked.

"A staff," he said.

Damocles beeped. Seres opened his mouth to describe it.

"Affirmative. Initiating neural link"

Silver light burst from the gem and he could feel a sharp, almost burning sensation in his mind. It was similar to the feeling he got whenever he tried to recall anything but didn't last as long.

The image of the staff appeared before him. Long and thick, it was a dark cherry with silver script engraved along its length. It wasn't entirely what he had imagined, but it was close.

"Please confirm selection"

He frowned. Had Damocles pulled that image from his mind? There was an odd weight in the back of his mind. It must be the neural link.

"You could have asked first"

Damocles gave a confused beep and he sighed. Damocles may have been an AI, but it apparently wasn't sophisticated enough to have morals.

"Yeah, that's what I wanted."

The jewel beeped again and more silver light shot out from it. It solidified into the staff he had just imagined.

"Set up complete. Ready"

The light vanished and he stared at the staff on his bed. It was very conspicuous. He didn't have to carry it around with him did he?

"Can you make it smaller?"

In answer, the light flashed again and turned into the jewel he had seen before.

"You can wear me," Damocles said.

Seres picked up the jewel and turned it over. There was nowhere to string a chain through it. He'd have to put it in a fastening first.

"Well, you're less conspicuous this way," he said and finally got out of bed.

Cold earth
dawn rising
a grave

You've been here all night. The ghost watches you from afar. They can't get close, not after last time.

Your tears have dried out, your breath shaking. The world is darker now that they're gone.

You pick yourself up. You can't stay here.

They watch you leave, tied to this place. You'll be back. You always come back.

Wolf and Seres ran across the field, laughing. The old man chased them, yelling something that they couldn’t hear. Wolf grinned at Seres and they picked up the pace until they were deep in the stone forest.

“That was fun,” Seres panted. “What are we going to find in Mr. Riley’s spellbook?”

Wolf drew himself up, until he was slightly taller than Seres. “Mr. Riley has a spell to turn Jeanette into a dog. I would like to get a look at it.” Seres laughed at the exasperated tone in his voice.

The street was quiet, except for the patter of rain on the sidewalk. Seres walked home, umbrella at his side, almost scraping the ground. There was a wet thud behind him and he turned to see Wolf look up at him with wet hair plastered to his face.

“Hey,” he said. “Why didn’t you wait for me?”

Seres shrugged. “I didn’t feel like it.”

Wolf glanced at his grey umbrella. “You have an umbrella.”

“You don’t?”

Wolf pushed himself to his feet and swiped at his forehead. The hair didn’t move. “Forgot it….why aren’t you using yours?”

“Didn’t want to.” Seres tilted his head up to the sky. The street smelled like rain and faded sunshine.

“Hello Akian”

Wolf stumbled backwards, tripping over a large stone. “Hiram,” he whispered.

Hiram nodded. “You weren’t expecting this were you?”

“Y…you can’t be.”

“I loved her, you know.” He walked closer and knelt in front of Wolf. “She was brilliant.”

“Why did you poison her then?” Wolf’s voice was hoarse and the words scraped his throat as they were expelled out.

Hiram’s smile turned into a frown. “I had to….she found out about the trick.”

“You trapped Seres’s father in the Starlight tower.”

Seres stood in the center of the room, drawing a large, chalk circle on the floor. The area around the circle was filled with geometric runes spiraling inward from the door. Wolf walked in, careful not the smudge them and leaned over Seres’s shoulder.

“What are you trying to summon?”

“The remnants of my soul. There’s still some out there.”

Wolf inspected the runes. There were many, squeezed next to each other, separated by only a thin, blue line. “Blue chalk?”

“I didn’t have white,” Seres replied, closing the circle. “It doesn’t matter. That’s just tradition….it should work. As far as I know, Hiram didn’t bind them somewhere. They’re still in the multiverse, probably causing chaos.”

Wolf laughed. “Bits of your soul wouldn’t do that. You’re too nice.”

He saw her at the coffee shop one dreary, fall, morning. He struck up a conversation, but forgot to get her name. Luckily, she came back the next day.

“Hey,” she said, “my name’s Crane.”

He grins. “Nickname?”

She nods. “I prefer it.”

He laughs and hands her the order. One day and he’s already got it memorized. She takes it and sips. She doesn’t frown or spit it out. He’s happy, this might be the only cup he’s ever made that wasn’t nasty.

“This is wonderfully strong.” She says and smiles at him. “I never got your name.”

“I’m Zane.” He holds out a hand and they shake. There’s no other customers in, so they sit at a table by the window.

“Are you in town for long?” He’s never seen her in town before and he knows everyone.

“My brother is an idiot.” Crane said as she strode into Seres’s bookstore. “He won’t apologize even though he feels sorry.”

“Hello Crane” Seres shelved a large tome before turning to her. “Shouldn’t he be the one talking to me?”

“That’s why I said he was an idiot.” She paused and studied him. “You’re an idiot too.” She said finally.

“I’m not ready to talk to him.” Seres picked up another book and set it on top of a large, unbalanced stack. The stack wobbled, before settling down.

Crane blinked and took a step back. “You’ll talk to him? Eventually?”

Morning found them sitting on the front steps and drinking. Seres laughed as the air warmed as the sun set the bushes on fire.

“We made it,” he said.

Wolf nodded and took a sip of his own drink. Seres sighed and put his down.

“What do we do now?”

“I have no idea. That’s the fun part though. No more planning, no more fighting, and no more running.”

“We’ll always be running.”

“But we’ll do it because we want to.”

Here, have a story fragment. This was supposed to be for these two prompts, but it never fully materialized.

Prompts:

The story starts when your protagonist answers a newspaper ad.

Another character is an alien entity who has been spying on your protagonist.

Fragment:

Help Wanted

You can earn $18 per hour

606-700-8910

Lester Solos frowned at the ad. Aside from the pay and phone number, it didn’t contain any other information. He glanced up at the budget amount tacked up on the wall next to the grocery list. He was running low and didn’t have enough to pay rent and buy groceries.  He groaned and picked up the phone. If I don’t pay the rent again, Lara’s going to kick me out for real this time.

He dialed the number.

The phone rang a few times before a cheerful muzak started playing. Lester blinked at it. What? Who uses muzak anymore?

There was a click and then-

“Hello?"  The voice was neither low nor high. The tone was bland and neutral pitched.

"Ah, yes. I’m calling about your help wanted ad in the newspaper.”

“You saw that?” The voice brightened.

“I did. Er…what exactly do you need help with?”

“I need someone to fix my ship!” Lester could hear the grin. “It’s been broken for ages. I think the thrusters might have been damaged. ”

“Thrusters?”

“Yeah, you have an engineering degree don’t you?”

Lester blinked. “Yeah, but what does that have do with anything?”

“You’re the only one who has the qualifications to fix my ship in the area. ”

“How do you know that?” Just who is this person?

“I’ve been watching you.”

Lester frowned. “I’m hanging up now.” He put the phone down and turned back to the newspaper. Guess I’ll try some of the other ads.
